When Visit Angus launched their new app I just knew it was going to be good, and I wasn’t disappointed. I downloaded the app and started planning my adventure in Angus with my family.

There are 80 locations to visit and 40 geo-located interactive experiences to unlock. There are certainly plenty of places to choose from to suit me and my family.

I have two young boys, one in primary and the other in preschool. They LOVE playing games on their tablets, so when I saw that the Visit Angus app had games, I knew this would be right up their street.

Over a weekend, we did the first of many trips around Angus and went to Forfar, Kirriemuir and Edzell.

First Stop – Forfar Botanists Garden

We parked in the Myre Car Park and stopped off at the Botanists Garden. It was a lovely warm, sunny day so we spent a bit of time here. I opened the app and unlocked the butterfly game. This was by far the favourite game my elder son experienced – he keeps asking when he can go back to play it again. The aim of the game is similar to hide and seek. There are 7 butterflies hiding on a 360 image and every time you find one, its picture and a fact pops up telling you about the different butterfly species found here. It was fun and educational – win win!

After, we took a trip into the town centre to pick up some delicious local food for our tea from the local butcher and had a wander around the other shops whilst in town.

Second Stop – Forfar Loch

To burn off some energy with the kids, we headed for a walk around Forfar Loch and took the opportunity to unlock the AR of an Osprey. My younger son was very impressed and wanted his picture taken next to it!

Third Stop – Star Rock Shop, Kirriemuir

As a treat, we took the boys to the Star Rock Shop in Kirriemuir, the oldest sweet shop in Scotland. The boys have never been here before so when they unlocked the 360 image of inside, they were SO excited about choosing a treat to take home. We met Liz, owner of the sweet shop, who let us try some of the sweets before deciding what we wanted to buy. The staff were so welcoming and friendly – the boys loved their visit. We’ll be back soon!

Fourth Stop – Peter Pan Statue, Kirriemuir

Trying out the Peter Pan game on the Visit Angus app in Kirriemuir

While in Kirriemuir, we stopped at the Peter Pan statue. My boys love the film Peter Pan and we are regular visitors to the Neverland Playpark at Kirrie Hill. I just knew the boys would love to try out this new game on the app to release the fairies and we spent ages taking turns.

While we were there, we also unlocked the 360 image of inside the Tayside Police Museum which is currently closed until 2022. My younger son wants to be a police officer when he’s older, so he found it so fascinating to see what it is like inside the museum. When it opens, this will be on our 2022 visit list.

Fifth Stop – Shakin’ Brig’, Edzell

Edzell

To round off the weekend, we went to the Shakin’ Brig’ in Edzell. The boys and their dad thoroughly enjoyed making the bridge shake! I on the other hand waited on them crossing the Shakin’ Brig’ before making my way across as fast as I could without looking down! My elder son loved making the bridge shake and thoroughly enjoyed watching me as I crossed with my eyes half shut. We unlocked the pooh sticks game and the boys had a go – they had lots of shots as they both wanted to win.

We headed along to the river and spent some time trying to skim stones across the water! I’m surprised we made it home dry. What fun we had making wonderful family memories.

We marked off the places we visited on the handy progress list on the app so we could keep a check of all the places we’ve been.

We have our next weekend planned using the app and can’t wait to visit lots more places.

Download the Visit Angus App

I would encourage local residents and visitors to Angus to download this pocket tour guide for Angus as I’ve been able to plan trips to places we’ve not been to before and visit some of my favourite places too.
