A Day Out in Forfar
Location 1: Restenneth Priory
Kick off your day with a visit to the historical Restenneth Priory just outside of Forfar. This is the site of an ancient church, where Robert the Bruce buried his young don in the 1300’s.
Located next to the priory you’ll find Angus Archives, a treasure trove of local history from the last 800 years. Pop in for a visit and a chat with the friendly staff who have a wealth of knowledge about the area. This is also the perfect place to research your family history, if you have ancestors from Angus.
Location 2: Murton Farm & Nature Reserve
Next stop – nature! Head along to Murton Farm and Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Forfar. Enjoy a walk around the extensive reserve, home to a number of lochs, wetlands, birds and wildfowl. There’s a play area for the little ones with pedal toys and adventure trails and don’t forget to say hello to the friendly animals also on the reserve, including Kune Kune pigs Dennis and Gnasher.
Grab some lunch in the tearoom before you leave – there’s a great range of home cooking and baking to choose from including daily specials.
Location 3: Newton Farm
Newton Farm is a real working Angus farm offering an award winning and authentic farm experience.
The farm tour involves meeting friendly animals including cows, sheep, goats, alpacas & Lucy, the micropig.
Other farm experiences take place depending on the season including a lambing special, feeding frenzy, highland cow and alpaca experience and a goat experience.
Location 4: Forfar Loch Country Park
Finish off the day with a visit to Forfar Loch Country Park. If you’re feeling up to it, there is a beautiful circular walk around the loch. The walk is suitable for all abilities and there are regular shelters all round for a bit of wildlife spotting. There’s a playpark here too, perfect for some quality family time.
Head into the town centre after where you’ll find a great choice of restaurants for dinner.
