Winter Walks & Takeaway: Astronomy, Stars and the Moon
15 December 2020, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
£15Our way of celebrating the wonders of winter and the festive season at this tricky time.
Join us for a series of guided walks around Hospitalfield grounds, after dark and during the day as we discuss the moon and astronomy, the intricate stone carvings of Hospitalfield’s architecture and the complex world of mushrooms and fungi.
At the end of each walk you will be able to takeaway delicious food cooked in our kitchen at Hospitalfield by chef Simon Brown. Menus are inspired by the topics of each walk.
Wrap up, bring your torch, and view the skies surrounding Hospitalfield that benefits from the lack of artificial light. Keith Williams reader of English at University of Dundee will lead the discusses the Great Moon Hoax of 1835, series of six articles that were published in The Sun, a New York newspaper, beginning on August 25, 1835, about the supposed discovery of life and even civilization on the Moon. The discoveries were falsely attributed to Sir John Herschel, one of the best-known astronomers of that time. Allegedly reprinted from an Edinburgh publication, they were intended in part as a satirical parody of the work of a Dundee astronomer, Rev Thomas Dick. Keith is joined by Brian Kelly, current tutor of astronomy evening classes and former City Astronomer at Dundee’s Mills Observatory to discuss the moon and the night sky in more detail.
