Scotland’s Gardens Scheme – Montrose Gardens
15 July 2023, 1:00 pm - 16 July 2023, 5:00 pm
Free – £536 The Mall Montrose DD10 8SS (Peter Wood): The garden at 36 The Mall has experienced huge changes throughout its lifetime and typically it would have been employed as a kitchen garden providing seasonal fruit and vegetables for the household. Since taking ownership of the property in 2012, we have endeavoured to return the garden to what might be something a little more traditional, albeit with a slightly more modern interpretation. The walled garden, so traditional to the period, now features fruit trees in the form of espaliers on the south facing aspect with additional raised beds comprising both soft fruit and vegetables. Additional borders and pots provide colour in abundance.
Arwin House 17 Renny Crescent, Montrose DD10 9BW (Trish and Andy Winton): Our garden is constantly evolving and has been 10 years in the making. It was designed to bring peace and tranquility and features different themed ‘rooms’. In 2015 we created an Asian inspired memorial garden in memory of my late son. Andy and I were fortunate to feature on BBC’s The Beechgrove Garden in 2019 and we look forward to welcoming you and hope you enjoy your visit.
Dorward House 24 Dorward Road, Montrose DD10 8SB (The Trustees of Dorward House): The original house was built in 1839 and became a care home for the elderly in 1950. There have been many changes over the years including the addition of the garden pavilion. The gardens are tended mainly by volunteers and their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off with stunning herbaceous borders and colourful annuals. There is also a ‘sensory garden’ to the rear which is dedicated mainly for the vulnerable dementia residents. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Directions: Dorward House is on the corner of Dorward Road and Warrack Terrace, and is adjacent to the Midlinks park and tennis courts. Directions to the other gardens are available with map and tickets from Dorward House.
