Mapping Grains Around Hospitalfield: Tour and Workshop

27 April 2024, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Mapping Grains Around Hospitalfield

Join us as we introduce you to the library at Hospitalfield, our collection of 18th century maps, and work with local artists to map our contemporary and ancient history of our locale.

The day is in two parts:

Tour: led by a knowledgeable volunteer guide
11am – 12.30pm

The day begins with a tour of the Hospitalfield library and map collection led by our knowledgeable volunteer guide.  You will be able to view our historic maps including one of France which includes a handwritten account, in English, of an outbreak of plague (i.e., the Black Death) in Provence, that began when a ship carrying grain from Syria docked in Marseilles and, despite the captain knowing there were plague cases among the crew and passengers, he allowed them to disembark.

Lunch: Between 12.30 and 2pm, our cafe will be open and we will have a soup and salad take away option to enjoy in the garden. We’ll be asking you to RSVP for your events and let us know in advance if you would like to order lunch.

Workshop: No map resembles the world
2-4pm

This workshop invites explorations of alternative, playful mapping techniques and experimentation with zine making.

Led by artists Aaron McCarthy and Alison Scott, we will draw inspiration from Hospitalfield’s cartographic collection and the surrounding landscape to develop our own imaginative, fragmentary maps.

The workshop welcomes conversations about the deep histories and shifting boundaries of the grounds, as well as broader connections to trade routes and changing land use. We will pay attention to the multiple languages, symbols, scales and aesthetic styles used to chart place.
