Many Feet Make Light Work: with Katherine Fay Allan
14 August 2024, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
£3Hospitalfield has invited artist Katherine Fay Allan to produce an earth oven, one of the simplest and most ancient cooking structures, for this year’s Summer Festival: Grain.
Join Katherine Fay for a hands-on workshop learning how to build an earth oven from the ground up. Katherine Fay will support participants step by step on how to make ‘cob’ a natural building material from clay, sand, straw, and water through the process of ‘puddling’; a method similar to grape-treading, where cob is created by stomping on the raw materials and mixing them with our feet. Once the cob is made, we will collectively apply and build the walls of the oven.
About Katherine
Katherine Fay Allan (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and creative facilitator. Her practice grows from lived experiences of illness to discuss the wider politics of societal and ecological health. Her artworks regularly present as installations that feature sculptural works intertwined with natural life. In previous projects, she has collaborated with plants, insects, and the sea to produce ever-changing sensory artworks exploring notions around ephemerality, embodiment, and renewal.
