Glamis Castle has a rich and diverse archive dating back to the 12th century, documenting the lives of not just the Strathmore family, the Castle and Estate, but also a wide spectrum of society.

Join our Archivist, Ingrid Thomson, or a unique insight into the Castle Archives. Glamis Castle has a rich and diverse archive dating back to the 12th century, documenting the lives of not just the Strathmore family, the Castle and Estate, but also a wide spectrum of society. Visitors will be greeted in the Coach House with tea/coffee and shortbread, where they can also view archives in the Sustaining Glamis Exhibition before climbing 92 steps to the Castle Archives to view a selection of treasures.

Documents displayed will include 17th century medicinal and culinary recipe books, early royal charters, Visitors’ Books (which include the signatures of Queen Elizabeth II from ‘Lilibet’ as a child to ‘Elizabeth R’ as Queen, and Strathmore family photographs), 18th century clothing and shoes, family diaries and journals, and other fascinating records. Visitors will have ample opportunity to ask questions and request further research.
