Tom Church Memorial Sculpture Trail and Exhibition
About This Event
The Tom Church Memorial Sculpture Trail and Exhibition celebrates the life and work of the late local sculptor and stonemason Tom Church (1944–2024), famous across Scotland for carving the 13-foot “Braveheart” William Wallace statue.
Tom was a sculptor, craftsman and, to so many people, a friend. Although he sadly passed away in June 2024, his work remains part of the landscape around Brechin, and this exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to remember him and celebrate the incredible work he left behind.
This is a self-guided trail spanning throughout the town of Brechin, highlighting permanent pieces and landmarks connected to Tom Church’s craftsmanship. His famous “Braveheart” statue (carved in the likeness of Mel Gibson as William Wallace) has a permanent home at Glebe Park, the home ground of Brechin City Football Club.
In addition to the trail, an exhibition will feature personal photographs, his original workshop tools, and information about the sculptures that remain throughout Brechin and beyond.
Locations: 3 High Street, Brechin (Marie Church Hairdressing)
Dates: 24 October to 15 November. Open daily 10am–3pm, Sunday & Monday 11am–2.30pm.
Donations are welcomed for the Kidney Dialysis Unit at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, in appreciation of the exceptional care Tom received during his years of dialysis.
If you knew Tom, knew his work, or simply love sculpture and local history, we’d be delighted if you could come along, have a look, and help us celebrate his life and legacy.
