Walking Trail: Sidlaw Hills

Newtyle and Sidlaw
Starting Point: Balkello Community Woodland car park, DD3 0QY
Grade: Moderate
Duration: 3 hrs
Distance: 7.5 km / 4.7 miles

Description:

The path starts through a gate in the left corner of the car park, there is a notice board here. The first part of the walk follows the purple waymarkers through the woodland, then where this path bends to the right continue straight on to reach a gap through a drystone wall.

Turn left following a track that runs alongside the wall watching out for a path to the right which cuts a corner to reach another track heading uphill. Where this track starts to flatten out take a narrow, muddy path to the right which heads steeply uphill to the summit of Auchterhouse Hill.

From the summit follow the path south east to reach a wide track heading downhill. At a bend take a path to the left which goes downhill opposite the clearly visible eroded track that leads up Balluderon Hill.

From the summit take a left fork on the track heading downhill towards a fence, a path following the fence downhill to another fence with a gate. You need to return to this point for the descent, but to continue on to Craigowl Hill go through the gate continuing to follow the fence as the path heads uphill towards the masts on top of the last hill.

Another fence with a stile is reached, cross the fence and continue towards the highest summit in the Sidlaws, crossing a fence to reach the trig point between the masts.

Return to the fence and gate at the base of the hill, going through the gate and taking a path to the left which heads downhill reaching the main path through the woodland. At a crossroads head straight on, signposts helping guide back down to the car park. Another track merges with the main track, further along at a fork take the left heading down to the car park.
