Walking Trail: Airlie Monument

Kirriemuir
Starting Point: Scott-Wilson Memorial Car Park, DD8 4ND
Grade: Moderate
Duration: 2 hrs
Distance: 2.5 km / 1.6 miles

Description:

A small car park lies to the right round the bend from the Scott-Wilson memorial. From here, follow the forestry track steeply uphill through the woods. At a signposted crossroads, turn left continuing the uphill climb, a yellow waymarker directing onto the main track at a bend.

As the track leaves the forest Airlie Monument comes into view. Follow the clear path through heather to the monument, a memorial to the ninth Earl of Airlie who was killed in the Boer War.

From the monument the views are extensive across Angus and to the glens of Clova and Prosen.

The return route is the same way. It is worth taking the short detour across the road to visit the Scott Wilson Memorial which was erected in 2012 to commemorate Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Edward Wilson, who lived in Glen Prosen for a time, both of whom died on the infamous expedition to reach the South Pole.

Points of interest around this route include the Scott-Wilson Memorial and the Angus Glens.
