Kinnettles Tea
Description:
Kinnettles Gold is Scotland’s first 100% pure black tea, grown, plucked and hand made here on our farm in Angus. We started growing tea in 2007 and in 2015 sold our first crop to Pekoe Tea in Edinburgh.
When we started our tea business we were only able to get plants grown from cuttings from tea bushes in Cornwall. Cuttings are shallow rooted and need polytunnel protection so initially it was all about proving a concept to see if we could actually grow and make tea in Scotland.
Here at Kinnettles we have planted an acre of tea grown from Nepali seed in our walled garden, and a further half acre grown from Georgian seed.
When we sold our Kinnettles Gold in 2015 a group of nine of us then came together and imported specially selected cold tolerant seed from Nepal and Georgia (ex Soviet). We wanted tea plants that would grow outside and seeds put down a good long deep tap root which helps the plants anchor and cope with our Scottish climate.
Our group is made up of nine farms and rural businesses in Angus, Fife, Perthshire and Aberdeenshire and the leaf from our nine gardens is combined to make a tea called Nine Ladies Dancing. Find out more about our groups project.
Kinnettles Tea is available to purchase on the Kinnettles Tea Garden website.
