Begin your second day with a walk around Forfar Loch Country Park, where the area’s natural and human history meet.

The 4-kilometre, or 2.5-mile, circuit around the loch is suitable for a range of abilities and forms part of the wider Forfar Path Network.

Look out for kingfishers, otters, foxes and roe deer as you explore. A crisp autumn or winter morning can be a peaceful time to experience the park and its wildlife.

The loch is also linked with St Margaret’s Inch, a glacial ridge and historic site where archaeological excavations uncovered silver ornaments, animal teeth and medieval chess pieces.

Paths can be wet, muddy or icy during autumn and winter. Wear suitable footwear and take care underfoot.

Continue to Restenneth Priory, an atmospheric medieval site with connections to Scotland’s religious and royal history.

The earliest surviving stonework dates from the 1100s, although the priory may stand on the site of a much earlier Pictish church established around AD 710. Alexander I is said to have transferred the annals of Iona here. In the 14th century, Robert the Bruce buried his young son, Prince John, at the priory.

Explore the ruins and take a moment to appreciate the importance of this peaceful place within the former Pictish kingdom.

The priory is free to visit and is open daily from 10am to 4pm between October and March. Wear sturdy footwear, particularly after heavy rain or during icy weather, and check current access information before travelling.

Enjoy lunch at Sinclair’s Kitchen, a countryside restaurant on Arbroath Road near Forfar.

Fresh, seasonal Scottish produce is at the heart of the menu. Ingredients can include local wild game, Aberdeen Angus beef and vegetables grown in the surrounding area.

Return to Forfar town centre and explore the history of the town at Meffan Museum and Art Gallery.

The museum follows Forfar’s story from the Stone Age to the final years of the Royal Burgh. Displays explore the town’s Pictish heritage, traditional industries, the Forfar witch trials and its food story, including the famous Forfar bridie.

One of the highlights is The Vennel, a reconstructed cobbled street lined with historic shops and workshops. Peer into a traditional sweet shop, a clockmaker’s workshop and a baker’s shop filled with bread and bridies.

The museum also displays carved Pictish stones and hosts exhibitions throughout the year in its two art galleries.

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday until the end of October. From November to March, winter opening days are Friday to Monday. Check current opening times before travelling.

Travel to Glamis and take a walk through one of Angus’ most distinctive historic villages.

The planned village was developed in the late 18th century by the 9th Earl of Strathmore. Its characterful buildings reflect its close relationship with nearby Glamis Castle.

The area was also an important religious centre during the Pictish period. Carved stones found in and around the village offer a fascinating connection to this earlier history.

Glamis Castle has been home to the Earls of Strathmore since 1372. It is associated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth and was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

The castle and grounds are open daily until 1 November, followed by selected seasonal events. Check the castle’s website for current opening information and details of what is taking place during your visit.

Complete your second day at Armstrong’s Bar & Restaurant, near Glamis.

The restaurant serves home-cooked Scottish food prepared with fresh local produce. Its menus feature traditional favourites, meat, seafood and vegetarian choices, accompanied by an extensive wine list and a selection of ales and whiskies.

With its relaxed interior and log-burning stove, Armstrong’s offers a warm and welcoming place to spend an autumn or winter evening. Families are welcome, and a children’s menu is available.

Begin your final day in Kirriemuir town centre at the Peter Pan Statue, a celebration of the town’s connection with local author J. M. Barrie.

The statue depicts Barrie’s best-known character and is an ideal starting point for discovering the places and stories that connect the author with his childhood home.

Continue to J. M. Barrie’s Birthplace, the small whitewashed weaver’s cottage where the author spent his childhood.

Barrie lived here with his parents and seven siblings, in rooms above his father’s weaving workshop. The washhouse in the yard became Barrie’s first theatre and may have helped inspire the Wendy house in Peter Pan.

The museum is open from March to October and closes for the winter. If you visit while it is closed, you can still see the cottage from the outside and appreciate its place in Barrie’s story.

Take a short walk to Kirriemuir Cemetery, where J. M. Barrie is buried alongside members of his family.

This quiet and reflective stop adds a personal dimension to the town’s literary story. It also offers time to consider Barrie’s lifelong connection with Kirriemuir and the family experiences that influenced his writing.

The cemetery remains an active place of remembrance. Please speak quietly, respect other visitors and avoid touching or disturbing graves and memorials.

Discover another of Kirriemuir’s famous cultural connections at the Bon Scott Statue on Bellies Brae.

Born in 1946, Bon Scott spent his early years in Kirriemuir before emigrating to Australia with his family in 1952. He later became the lead singer of rock band AC/DC.

Created by artist John McKenna, the life-sized bronze statue was unveiled in 2016 during the tenth anniversary of Bonfest. It shows the singer holding a microphone and bagpipes, celebrating both his musical career and his Scottish roots.

Stop for lunch at The Garden Café at Pathhead Farm, set within a working equestrian centre on the edge of Kirriemuir.

Much of the produce used in the breakfast and lunch menus is grown on the farm. Choose from seasonal lunches, snacks and home baking, accompanied by tea or freshly brewed coffee from local producers.

The working farm brings an added sense of place to your visit, with activity often taking place around the equestrian centre. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but they must remain on a lead as horses and riders may be nearby.

After lunch, travel towards Airlie Monument on Tulloch Hill.

The monument commemorates David William Stanley Ogilvy, the 11th Earl of Airlie, who was killed at the Battle of Diamond Hill during the Boer War on 11 June 1900. Built with stone from Herdhill Quarry near Kirriemuir, the 65-foot monument was completed in 1901.

The route begins near the Scott-Wilson Memorial and climbs steeply through woodland before crossing open heather to the monument. From the summit, enjoy wide views across Angus and towards Glen Clova and Glen Prosen.

The route is approximately 2.5 kilometres, or 1.6 miles, and takes around two hours.

This is an exposed hill walk with steep sections. Check the weather, visibility and ground conditions before setting out, wear sturdy footwear and leave enough time to return well before dusk.
