Water of Saughs

Water of Saughs, Angus, Scotland

Description

A river of the southern Grampians in north-east Angus, the Water of Saughs rises as headstreams to the northeast of Ben Tirran. The river flows generally eastwards through the upper section of Glen Lethnot before becoming the West Water.

The West Water has the appearance of a moorland river dropping through large boulders and ledges, but without the confinement of a gorge.  This section enables paddling when the river is high enough.

Above Purner’s Bridge is The Loops, a left-twisting fall.  The pools below The Loops are hot spots for anglers and care should be taken as the river is narrow at this point.

A robust estate track follows Water of Saughs upstream from here into the remoter upper recesses of the glen, offering access to a succession of low hills flanking the river.
