About the venue:

Hospitalfield House is a very special 19th century Arts & Crafts house, built on the site of a medieval hostel or hospital established by the Benedictine order of monks who founded Arbroath Abbey.

The house as it is today was the vision of 19th century artist Patrick Allan Fraser and his wife Elizabeth. At Hospitalfield, the Allan Fraser’s weren’t so much creating their home but a place of learning for artists of the future. Their legacy continued into the 20th century with the Art School which opened in 1902 and remains today through our continuing contemporary art programmes.

The house grounds also feature a distinctive double Walled Garden, redesigned by the late Nigel Dunnett and reopened in 2021. The scheme was developed to reveal the unique horticultural history of the site at Hospitalfield, which has been tended as a garden for over 800 years.
