About This Event

Join Sustainable Kirriemuir for a swift saunter around Kirriemuir town centre and learn more about this beautiful species and why they visit Kirriemuir each summer.

During their lives, swifts can travel over a million miles, between migrating from Africa to Europe each summer, as well as hundreds of miles hunting for insects each day. Severe weather, sometimes caused by climate change can disrupt these incredible journeys, particularly unseasonal cold snaps when swifts are recorded as dying of hypothermia. Also young swifts can leave nests too early during unseasonal high temperatures and die. In Kirriemuir, we want to make sure that when they arrive here they are able to find and build homes.

Starting from our Nature Detectives Swift Sign outside Kirriemuir Library, we will have a gentle walk and talk around the town centre, with some of our knowledgeable volunteers sharing what they know about these amazing creatures who visit us each summer, and how we can help them in Kirriemuir. If we’re lucky enough we’ll witness a screaming party of swifts flying overhead.

Please feel free to bring binoculars if you own a pair and dress for the weather conditions on the day. A travel mug of tea or coffee might be a good idea too! Children under 18 must attend with a responsible adult.

Meeting at 8.15pm at Kirriemuir Library, Reform Street, Kirriemuir, DD8 4BS.
