Doors Open Days 2023

Event Details

Montrose Basin is an enclosed estuary of the River South Esk covering 750 hectares of tidal mudflats, offering feeding and roosting ground to a plethora of bird species.

In autumn and winter, the Basin is home to over 100,000 migratory birds including pink-footed geese, wigeon and a variety of other waterfowl and waders, while during the spring and summer months the estuary supports various breeding colonies including sand martins, common terns and eider.

Our four-star visitor centre offers a great day out for all the family in Angus. We have excellent brand-new telescopes and binoculars that will get you close-up views of all the wildlife on the Montrose Basin, including common seals at low tide, and a huge variety of waders and ducks.

There is usually a small admission charge for the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre, but we’re having a free entry weekend to celebrate Doors Open Days!

The Montrose Basin is internationally important for pink-footed geese, and they often begin to arrive in mid-September. Why not join us in anticipating the first arrivals? By mid-October we can get up to 80,000 roosting on the Basin all at once. Staff and volunteers will be on hand in the visitor centre to tell you all about our exciting pink-footed goose season, and all the events and activities we run alongside it. It’s a magical spectacle and one of the best wildlife experiences in Angus!
