Kinnettles Gold is Scotland’s first 100% pure black tea, grown, plucked and hand made here on our farm in Angus. We started growing tea in 2007 and in 2015 sold our first crop to Pekoe Tea in Edinburgh. We produce tiny amounts of handmade tea; last year’s crop only totalling 2.5kg.
When we started our tea business we were only able to get stock (cuttings) from Darjeeling bushes in Cornwall. These need polytunnel protection and are the mature bushes that we pluck our Kinnettles Gold from. In 2015 a group of nine farms and rural businesses in Angus, Fife and Perthshire came together and with consultancy help imported specially selected cold tolerant seed from Nepal and Georgia (ex Soviet). These are robust enough, because they have good tap roots which will cope with our Scottish climate. The teas to be created from these tea bushes will be available in 2020 when they are mature enough. To find out more about this project, visit the website.
Here at Kinnettles we have planted an acre of tea from Nepali seed in our walled garden, and this year plan a further half acre of Georgian tea bushes. At Kinnettles we offer two hour educational tours to our walled garden, polytunnels and greenhouse (by appointment only, £25pp including tea tasting plus tea and cake afterwards). Purchase of Kinnettles Gold can only be done through Pekoe Tea in Edinburgh or online.
