Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre are holding a Families Open Weekend – Sat 24th and Sun 25th August with free entry both days from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
Part of the Heritage Centre’s Battle of Britain commemorations will be a ‘Squadron Scramble’ re-enactment, after the World War Two pilots who ran to their Spitfire aircraft when the alarm bell was rung. Visitors will find lots of action to hold the attention; over the weekend the Centre’s own Red Lichtie replica Spitfire will have its cockpit open for visitors to sit in and take their selfie picture, complete in flying jacket, helmet and goggles. With activities for children including uniforms to try on, games and stalls.
Visitors can sound the air raid siren, man the machine gun and take-off on the Flight Simulator. Two aircraft from World War 1 on display include the BE2 and visitors can check out the recently completed Sopwith Camel rebuild. Also, on display are a Gloster Meteor and a de-Havilland Vampire and two World War 2 aircraft in the workshops under restoration are a Miles Hawk and Avro Anson.
Further activity, dependent on the weather, is also planned at the Broomfield Playing Fields where again a light aircraft Fly-In with aircraft attending from all over the UK. Last year over 40 aircraft visited during the weekend while several Vintage and Classic Aircraft are booked in to return to Broomfield.
An additional first time attraction this year, will be a Classic Car Event organised by Montrose Rotary Club. A number of unique vehicles will be on display alongside the aircraft at the playing fields, including a rare Bugatti and a Jaguar XK120 that was previously owned by actor Richard Burton. Also there will be Introductory Flights operated by Alba Air Sports and Gyro Fly Experience Perth. Weather depending they will bring along their Gyrocopter and Microlight with flights priced from £50 for 20 minutes minutes. Normally based at Perth Airport they offer full training from Ab initio to National Private PiIots Licence level.
Alexander Air, who provide flying training at Dyce will be bringing their Cessna 172 for Fixed Wing Introductory Flights.
