Zoe Gibson: Fish of Knowledge Children’s Graduation Art Work
18 June 2022, 10:00 am - 14 August 2022, 4:00 pm
For Hospitalfield’s 2022 Children’s Graduation Art Work artist Zoe Gibson has worked with 400 children to each design, make and contribute a fish scale to create a sculpture of a giant fish titled The Fish of Knowledge.
Conceived by Gibson, the Fish takes inspiration from Arbroath’s proximity to the sea and fishing heritage as well as the mythical and historical imagery on Pictish stones in Arbroath and its surroundings. Each scale reflects the young person’s personality and assembled together form a collectively made art work.
Come to see the Fish of Knowledge on view in the Paddock at Hospitalfield from Saturday 18 June – Sunday 14 August 2022.
Hospitalfield’s Annual Graduation Art Work is made with every pupil from Timmergreens and Muirfield Primary Schools and celebrates the move of Primary 7 children onto their secondary schools. Previously taking the form of a procession, this project joins the schools together in creativity, feeling a sense of pride for Arbroath and embracing the exciting move up to secondary school during the last week of term.
Zoe Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist whose works primarily combine sculpture, filmmaking, installation, mural painting and drawing. Zoe has a particular interest in exploring storytelling using a visual language and in the use of colour and pattern to create a vivid alternate world. She likes to walk the line between sweet and sinister looking at domesticity, myth, grief, ritual and the magic of everyday moments.
Zoe draws inspiration from lots of areas but is especially interested in folk art and the idea that not only should art be accessible for everyone but that it should be a deeply enmeshed part of everyday life and surroundings. Zoe graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (2017) and has taken part in various exhibitions and events including ‘DAILY DANCE!‘ Generator Projects (2021) mural project (Open/Close Dundee) 2021 was shortlisted for the Trinity Buoy Wharf drawing (2021) and makes art and decoration for club nights and festivals.
