Mike and Ruthy of The Mammals at Montrose Folk Club
11 April 2023, 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
£12
Mike Merenda and Ruth Ungar are the creative heart of The Mammals, the Folk Rock band from New York State, whose Concert at Celtic Connections in 2018 is still remembered as a memorable magical celebration.
When not on the road with The Mammals, Mike and Ruthy take their harmony-driven fiddle, guitar and banjo show out around the world, most recently to Australia. Anais Mitchell has described Mike and Ruthy as “a national treasure”.
Mike Merenda’s songs paint word pictures; “Sunshiner”, which simultaneously honoured the past and looked to the future, won an International Folk Music Award Song of the Year nomination. He was permitted privileged access to the Woody Guthrie archive to complete/re-work an unfinished piece, the outstanding “My New York City”.
Ruth Ungar has an outstanding vocal style, ranging from a capella balladry to earthy soul and country. She learned fiddle at a young age, her father being fiddler/composer, Jay Ungar, best known for “Ashokan Farewell”, which Ruth enjoys performing.
Admission is £12, payable at the door.
