Craigowl Hill

Craigowl Hill, Angus

Description

Venture over the Sidlaw Hills near Dundee to make a visit – at least to take in the highest top in the area, Craigowl Hill.  By starting from Balkello Community Woodland, it is straightforward to reach the three tops of Craigowl Hill, Balkello Hill and Auchterhouse Hill as there are numerous paths.

The high points of each hill differ considerably in character: Craigowl Hill has a trig pillar that is surrounded by telecoms masts and infrastructure and reaches a height of 455m (1,492 feet) north-east of Kirkton of Auchterhouse; Balkello Hill has a fine memorial toposcope (dedicated to Sydney Scroggie, blind hillwalker, poet and author) and Auchterhouse Hill is ringed by the remains of the ramparts of a hill fort – but is free of embellishment.
