Event Details
Kirriemuir Camera Obscura, one of only three in Scotland, is housed in a purpose-designed turret room in the Barrie Pavilion on Kirrie Hill, which was gifted to the town of Kirriemuir by Sir JM Barrie in 1930. It provides a fascinating glimpse of historic technology and striking views of the surrounding countryside. The Camera Obscura works best on bright sunny days so there will be times when the view will not be at its best due to weather conditions.
In the main pavilion, Cafe Obscura serves teas and freshly ground coffee from Sacred Grounds Coffee Company in Arbroath. You can also enjoy a selection of filled rolls, scones with local jam and clotted cream, Kirriemuir gingerbread, a selection of cakes or strawberry tarts in season.
The Camera Obscura and Cafe Obscura are completely self-funding and all profits are given back to the community, and are entirely managed and staffed by Kirriemuir Regeneration Group volunteers.
Drop in and enjoy the views from this unique historic attraction and hear tales of local people and places. Visitors can also enjoy activities available to borrow from the pavilion, including kites for flying on the hill, Giant Jenga and Giant Connect 4.
Please note – Café Obscura is wheelchair accessible, however the camera room itself is reached by stairs and therefore not suitable for wheelchair users.
